Made in Britain launches new Environmental & Social Value Certification
Made in Britain, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting British manufacturing, has just rolled out its new Environmental & Social Value (ESV) Certification. This initiative aims to help UK manufacturers, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), showcase their positive contributions to the environment and society while gaining a competitive edge in procurement.
The ESV Certification offers a practical, credible, and user-friendly framework for businesses to highlight how they contribute to economic growth, maintain environmental responsibility, and create measurable social impact.
In line with the UK Government’s Social Value Model (2025) and the Procurement Act 2023, this certification allows all 2,200 member companies of Made in Britain to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices and ethical operations. By effectively communicating their environmental and social value, manufacturers can enhance their chances in both public and private tenders.
Created in partnership with MAP UK & International—a consultancy that specializes in supply chain and international trade solutions—this certification also acts as a valuable tool for buyers and procurement professionals looking for suppliers who prioritize local jobs, skills development, community engagement, environmental sustainability, and ethical supply chains.
Empowering UK manufacturers to showcase responsible growth
John Pearce, the Chief Executive Officer of Made in Britain, shared his thoughts:
“The ESV Certification provides our members with a practical and cost-effective way to highlight their social value through a quick and easy assessment. It acknowledges the great work companies are already doing in their everyday operations, without adding any extra costs or burdens.
“Environmental and Social Value is becoming a key factor in how Britain purchases, builds, and grows. Members of Made in Britain are already making the kind of positive impact that buyers and communities are eager to see — this certification simply helps them showcase that impact in a clear and confident manner.”
Shirley Cooper OBE, Small Business Crown Representative, also chimed in:
“UK SMEs are truly the backbone of our economy — they drive sustainable growth, create jobs, and strengthen communities across the nation. I wholeheartedly support initiatives like the ESV Certification that empower SMEs to stand out, secure new orders, and receive the recognition they rightfully deserve for their environmental and social contributions.”
Manufacturers are already seeing some great results!
Early adopters of the ESV Certification have shared their positive experiences.
Mark Moody, the Sales & Marketing Director at WDS Components Ltd, expressed his thoughts:
“As a small manufacturer, we found the process to be refreshingly simple. It allowed us to take a good look at our Environmental & Social Value practices and gave us a credible way to highlight our efforts to customers and buyers.”
David Osborne, the Chief Executive Officer of Roman Ltd, added:
“This initiative is fantastic for members of Made in Britain. It provided our team with straightforward tools to clearly and confidently communicate our contributions to people, the planet, and our local community.”
The Environmental & Social Value Certification is now open to all members of Made in Britain.
