Masterflex AG recommends hoses with fully incorporated stainless steel helix

Listen to this article

Hygienic transport of foodstuffs has always been a matter of importance; however, it becomes even more topical in view of the upcoming Anuga FoodTec in March. The Gelsenkirchen-based Masterflex AG, the trusted expert for upmarket hose and connecting systems made of innovative high-tech plastics, fabrics and foils, recommends high-quality hoses with a fully incorporated stainless steel helix.  “What matters most in food conveyance is the approval of hose and connecting systems for food-grade applications. Contamination of the foodstuffs conveyed must be prevented by all means“ explains Masterflex Sales Manager Alfons Beitz.

Masterflex offers special hoses that are particularly designed for the transport of foodstuffs: Master-PUR Food, Master-PO Food and Master-SIL Food hoses are made of abrasion-resistant polyurethane, polyolefin and silicone. They all feature a fully embedded stainless steel helix and comply with the most stringent food safety regulations.

It’s the helix that makes the difference

Some hose manufacturers still use copper-plated wire helixes that may endanger food safety. The helix can become exposed due to abrasion, causing rust build-up or copper particles to contaminate the foodstuffs conveyed. Copper corrodes in the presence of acids and forms copper salts. Directive 2005/79/EC, amending Directive 2002/72/EC, lays down strict migration limits for all copper salts, which means conveyed foodstuffs may only contain a very small amount of such substances. This is why, for several years, Masterflex has been consistently using stainless steel helixes that are even approved for direct food contact. All hoses are manufactured from safe raw materials, which, it goes without saying, are specified in the hose and connecting element certificates. Given such conscientious manufacturing methods, it is little wonder that Masterflex hoses and connecting elements are certified to Directive 2002/72/EC.

Keep an eye on costs and bulk goods

Quick, easy and safe connection of installations and components, short set-up times plus excellent cleaning properties – Masterflex food-grade hoses meet all requirements for successful operation of food production plants. Another practical feature is the transparent quality of the hose, which allows food manufacturers to track the bulk goods being conveyed and check their flow rate. The smooth bore facilitates easy hose cleaning. Masterflex food-grade hoses are designed for the transport of dry media such as sugar, flour, spices, powders, and powdered milk but are also suitable for conveying liquid foodstuffs. The hoses have outstanding flow characteristics, high tensile strength and tear resistance.

The lightweight and highly flexible food-grade hoses feature excellent abrasion resistance, can withstand temperatures from -60°C to +200°C (intermittent to +230 °C) and impart no taste or odour. Static charges can be dissipated by grounding both ends of the reinforcing helix.

The special hoses are available in standard diameters of DN 13 to DN 200 and standard lengths of up to ten meters; customized lengths are available upon request.
