Micronics flow meter measures run-off from lake at Surrey University

Listen to this article

A British company with extensive experience in the chemical, water and waste sectors was asked by Surrey University to help measure the run-off from a large lake during heavy rain periods on the campus near Guildford in Surrey. The University was being charged a flat rate for the water and they wanted to explore being charged only for what was used, particularly in periods when there is lighter rainfall. The institution is also challenging itself to reduce water consumption, it’s set itself a 15% absolute water reduction target against the 2017-18 benchmark and the detection of leaks by the installation of strategic meters is one of the things they’re using to help achieve this aim. Liverpool-based Rostech Environmental was called in to provide a solution. Carl Rostock, the founder and MD of Rostech has a long-standing relationship with Micronics and was advised by them that a UFAV 5500 Area Velocity Flow Meter would accurately and reliably supply the required data. And he is very satisfied with the contribution the specialist instrument has made to the bottom line of the University: “Since investing in this ingenious instrument they have achieved significant savings by eliminating estimated bills and it also helps achieve their objective to reduce leakage.”

The easy-to-use Area Velocity Flow Meter measures flow through open channels, partially full pipes and surcharged pipes without the need for a flume or weir. This makes it ideal for use with wastewater, stormwater, effluent, industrial wastewater and irrigation water, making it highly versatile. It uses a submerged ultrasonic sensor, which resists fouling, corrosion and abrasion to continuously measure both velocity and level in the channel. The flow meter can be configured with the standard submerged velocity-level sensor, or with submerged velocity plus a separate non-contacting ultrasonic level sensor, for highly aerated fluids or those with a high concentration of suspended solids.
