New White Paper Offers Guidance on Airtight Traceability

Listen to this article

Food safety regulations and many retail-driven standards require traceability. A fully-integrated, computerized system can enable targeted action to ensure compliance, facilitate recall, and improve quality. However, various systematic concerns affect whether or not traceability is airtight and can pass audit. To provide guidance on factors that affect traceability within a given production facility, Mettler-Toledo has published a new white paperentitled “Traceability for Standard Compliance and Process Improvement.” This addition to the company’s extensive collection of thought-leadership resources can help manufacturers determine adequate traceability methods, providing for system planning, implementation and maintenance

Traceability can be loosely defined as the ability to follow a substance through all stages of production and distribution, and it is vital to consumer safety. This includes clear identification of raw materials and storage records and allows immediate upstream tracing and downstream tracking of potentially faulty components and batches.Solutions that integrate scales, scanners and printers from goods-in to shipment provide the highest level of traceability. However, an appropriate design that easily integrates into a producers daily workflow will vary according to issues such as the number/nature of raw materials/components, component criticality, batch/lot size and production processes.

Expanding product families and increasing awareness of safety issues among consumers increase the urgency of implementing complete traceability in production facilities. This paper seeks to address common areas of concern regarding traceability and making sure relevant information connecting suppliers, components, customers, and product/intermediate disposal can be provided to authorities in a timely manner. Ultimately, this will help a manufacturer to protect his valuable brand and to fulfill legislative principles while simultaneously offering a wealth of quality data to help with internal process improvement.
