NHS Trust Likely Saves £750K per Annum With New Pump and Control System
Pump service specialist Dura Pump has resolved a major sewage issue for a large NHS hospital in the Midlands, saving the Trust a massive three-quarters of a million pounds annually.
Frequent blockages caused by floating debris and also fats, oils and greases were rendering the existing pumping system ineffective. This was causing constant downtime and the expense of sending tankers to remove accumulated waste.
To tackle the problem with a more robust and efficient solution capable of managing high solids content, Dura Pump installed its latest system – Velocity Sentinam – incorporating two submersible Chopper Pumps manufactured by Landia.
Originally invented by Landia in 1950, the Chopper Pump features an external knife system that continuously reduces solids before they enter the pump casing.
“We’ve always had very good experiences when using Landia’s pumps”
Along with the new 15kW heavy-duty pumps, Dura Pump updated the hospital's effluent system with a twin control panel that is fully integrated with the Building Management System (BMS).
The Dura Pump SenIQ panel incorporates inverters, radar-based tank level measurement and intelligent control software for energy-efficient pumping. The system tracks incoming flow rates and automatically modulates pump output to match, reducing power consumption.

Dura Pump Technical Director, John Calder, commented:
“We've previously had good experiences with Landia's pumps, so we were certain that these reliable tools would be able to handle this challenging hospital application without any difficulties. Previously, when providing sewage solutions for prisons, we've witnessed that not even shoes, jeans or bed sheets have been able to stop the Landia Chopper Pumps from running.”
By bespoke software developed by Dura Pump (established in 1976), wastewater is pumped right to the bottom of the tank, which allows the pumps to skim floating rubbish off the top. This can be repeated multiple times daily.
Frequent skimming of the tank by the system significantly reduces the build-up of fat. This is augmented by adjustable start/stop levels so that fat does not accumulate at a single level over time.
The new system also includes Dura Pump SenSync, a remote alarm and monitoring service. If there is a problem – for instance, pump failure, abnormal pit level or power loss – a message is sent at once to a pre-programmed mobile or email address so that prompt action can be taken before any noticeable disruption is caused.
Over time, the system will be capable of identifying trends for pump wear, valve performance issues and other critical parameters.
The hospital now operates much more efficiently, with disruption and downtime to day-to-day activities minimized”
Thanks to full BMS integration, the new solution requires little manual intervention while offering real-time operational insight.
John Calder added:
“With no further repeat pipe blockages, the hospital now operates far more efficiently, with disruption to day-to-day activities and downtime minimised. In conjunction with our bespoke system, the Landia Chopper Pumps play an important part in allowing us to deliver improved cost control and energy savings to our customer.“
