Components of a Pressure Release Valve

How a Pressure Release Valve Works

A pressure release valve is a device that is used for protecting a pressurised system or vessel during the event it goes over its pressure limit. Pressure release valves are used in applications where there is a chance that the pressure inside a system or vessel may increase above the maximum allowable working pressure. A pressure release valve comprises of several components that work in unison to keep the system pressure in control.

The Components

  • Seat – This is the rubber tube part that comes in contact with the media passing through the middle of the valve (i.e. water, sludge or sewage waste). The rubber tube has a high rebound elasticity and opens/closes with the use of air pressure, securely holding the media in place with a tight shutoff.
  • Body – The body of a pressure release valve is usually either aluminium or stainless steel, depending on the application.
  • End Connections – These are available flanged (DIN PN10/16 or ANSI150), or with screwed internally threaded sockets.
  • PRV System – The pressure release system on the valve consists of a steel manifold block, a shrader connector push-fitting, and a pressure gauge rated from 0-11 BAR.
  • Pressure Switch – The switch is an optional accessory to complete the pressure release system on a pinch valve. It sends an electrical signal to the user, determining if the valve is open or closed, if it is holding pressure correctly, and also advises if the valve is leaking etc

Pressure Release Valve Accessories

Pressure release valves are versatile equipment that can be enhanced in order to improve their efficiency. They can be equipped with different types of pinch valve accessories that allow the operators to have better control over their operation.

For automating the valve operation, limit switches are used to control on/off applications by issuing a binary signal whenever valve travel lags behind or goes over a set limit. This electric signal can be used for a number of things such as issuing audible and visual alarms, switching control signals, and for creating a connection to central control or alarm systems.

One of the commonly used switching pressure release valve accessories is a solenoid valve which is used for the closing and opening of the valve assembly. They also serve as safety control circuits to form the interface between the pneumatic actuator and the electric control level.

To provide a constant supply pressure to pneumatic control equipment, supply pressure regulators are widely used. They are used for maintaining pressure to a set limit in a compressed air network.

You can use quick exhaust valves to decrease the overall time needed for venting actuators.

Visual Pressure Indicator Set is a great tool for indicating and monitoring operating conditions of pressure release valves. This unit signals a red indication light whenever the control pressure goes above 1.5 bar to shut off the valve.
