Pumps company earns first industrial BREEAM ‘Excellent’ in Cornwall

Listen to this article

Manufacturer of tube and hose pumps

Watson-Marlow Pumps Group’s new manufacturing plant in Falmouth has been recognised for its green credentials. It is the first industrial facility in Cornwall to be awarded a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The £7.3 million Watson-Marlow silicone tubing plant has been praised for its energy efficiency and preservation of the surrounding natural landscape. Under BREEAM, the Building Research Establishment’s method for assessing sustainability, the facility has achieved an impressive ‘Excellent’ rating. According to BRE statistics, though there have been 15 industrial certifications in Cornwall, Watson-Marlow’s Falmouth plant is the first to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating.

Environmental features at the facility include high levels of insulation, rainwater recovery and air locks to all external doors, to minimise heat loss and keep the atmosphere clean. The building has been ‘sunk’ into the slope of the land to minimise visual impact, and 75% of the topsoil and spoil from the excavation was reused. More than 4000 plants have been used in landscaping, including 23 oak trees.

Watson-Marlow, the largest manufacturer of tube and hose pumps in the world, with its international operations based in Falmouth, drew on all-important external support to achieve its sustainable vision. For construction of the new facility, it received investment of £769,000 from the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Convergence and £256,000 from the South West RDA.

Christopher Gadsden, Managing Director of Watson-Marlow Pumps Group, commented: “We have put a great deal of investment into our new building and we are delighted to have achieved the ‘Excellent’ rating from BREEAM. Although this is a manufacturing facility, we have still made every effort we can to deliver a building that is both sustainable and fit for purpose. ”

Watson-Marlow is unique in being the only peristaltic pump manufacturer to have its own silicone tubing plant, giving users the benefits of a short supply chain and total quality.  The company’s investment in this state-of-the-art, sustainable facility demonstrates Watson-Marlow’s commitment to its tubing customers.

The BREEAM influence on the design of the new building will help to ensure that both the cost of running the plant and its impact on the environment are minimised.

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions

About us

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) peristaltic tube and hose pumps meet requirements including: value for money; low cost of ownership; reliability and ease of maintenance to the food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and many other industries.

We demonstrate how pumps deliver significant process efficiencies over the lifetime of the equipment. Whether performing flavouring addition in food processing, chemical metering in water treatment or mineral recovery, we have a solution which can cut pump downtime and reduce costs through higher accuracy metering and transfer. WMFTG has dedicated application engineers available to help customers make the right pump and tubing choice from a range providing microlitres per minute to 80 cubic metres per hour flow rates.

The only part of the pump to come into contact with the product is the tube or hose. This means there are no seals or valves that can wear or fail. Replacing the tube or hose can be performed quickly and safely. Peristaltic pump benefits include:

Total fluid containment with no seals No ancillaries Handle viscous and abrasive slurries and sludge Self-priming capability Dry running without damage to the pump In addition to their range of positive displacement pumps, Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group has added PTFE-lined chemical and industrial hoses to their range. Aflex hoses are reinforced to withstand the most severe conditions and use.
