Wastewater Analysis Protects River
Key points
The challenge
A UK company in the chemical industry utilises Endress+Hauser equipment to ensure its treated wastewater can be discharged to a local river without any significant environmental impact. Monitoring and reporting the total organic carbon (TOC) levels of the wastewater is essential both to comply with Environment Agency regulations and as an indicator of plant health.
A spokesperson said, “If the TOC levels are elevated at the final outflow, you know the plant’s not doing its job by getting rid of it during the process.”
The solution
The treated water is mixed with site cooling water (and surface water if raining) before passing along an open drainage channel and entering the river. All throughout the treatment process the water is sampled and tested using TOC analysers to ensure the water quality meets the requirements of the operating permit.
The company’s old analysers from a third-party supplier had become unreliable, so the project to deliver new instruments was put out to tender. Endress+Hauser’s CA72TOC analysers came out on top in terms of both reliability and price, and three analysers were installed at the inlet, outlet and discharge point.
The analysers measure reliably and accurately even in complex applications. Designed for long-term stability and highest availability, they offer maximum operational safety, and clear diagnostic messages actively support predictive maintenance strategies.
Ease of use was an important consideration. “The analysers are there to stop the outflow, so they need to be reliable and maintained regularly,” the spokesperson said. “Endress+Hauser have done a lot of training with us, so in between service visits we can look after them ourselves.” An automated system has been put in place so that if high levels of TOC are identified, the outflow pumps are stopped from running and the wastewater is diverted away from the river.
The benefits
Compliance with regulatory requirements and the ability to automatically adjust operations based on the results obtained are important benefits. And being able to access the results remotely and in real time is key.
Accurate and reliable monitoring of what is discharged from the plant not only helps to optimise processes and comply with strict environmental regulations but also gives peace of mind that the river and the wildlife that depend on it are protected from pollutants.
