Watson-Marlow launches Bredel CIP pump for hygienic, efficient and sustainable cleaning

Listen to this article

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions (WMFTS), part of the Spirax Group, has announced the launch of the Bredel CIP pump, a new solution developed for sanitary and hygienic processes where efficiency, sustainability and reliability are critical.

Clean-in-place (CIP) is an essential operation across the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. However, conventional cleaning systems often result in lengthy downtime, higher maintenance costs and increased risks of product contamination. The Bredel CIP pump has been specifically engineered to overcome these challenges, providing a system that delivers hygienic cleaning performance without requiring bypass lines or full disassembly.

Meeting stringent hygienic cleaning standards

The Bredel CIP pump incorporates a newly designed rotor that enables companies to achieve CIP cleaning velocities in excess of 2 metres per second. In addition, automatic retractable shoes allow the pump element and the downstream process line to be cleaned at the correct fluid velocity.

Retracting the shoes during cleaning prevents hose compressions at high temperatures, extending hose life and significantly reducing the costs associated with hose replacement.

Flexible and easy to upgrade

The new model is available in three sizes:

  • 20 – 600 L/h
  • 25 – 1800 L/h
  • 32 – 3200 L/h

For existing users, upgrading is straightforward. The rotor can be replaced with the CIP variant directly in-situ by following clear step-by-step instructions, eliminating the need to remove the pump from the process line. This avoids production stoppages and ensures faster integration into existing hygienic systems.

Reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint

The Bredel CIP pump is not only designed for hygienic operation but also for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Bredel has calculated that users can achieve significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions.

For example, a brewery running 24/7 with four one-hour cleaning cycles per day can now reverse the CIP pump to retract the shoes and switch off power during the cleaning process. This single change saves the equivalent of four hours of power per day, cutting energy use during CIP cycles by 16%. Over the course of a year, this translates to 1,460 fewer operating hours, lowering operating costs and reducing the brewery’s environmental footprint.

Key benefits:

  • Less downtime and maintenance costs
  • Lowered power consumption during CIP cycles
  • Extended hose life and reduced replacements
  • Usage according to FDA, EC1935 and 3A
  • Precise dosing in both suction or discharge

Grace Madden, Bredel Product Manager, commented: “The Bredel CIP pump is the perfect choice for reliable, accurate and gentle pumping. It can easily handle delicate ingredients such as yeast, additives and abrasive filtration agents that cause significant wear in other pump technologies. The CIP pump will help increase your uptime and decrease maintenance costs.

This hygienic and efficient pump is suitable for food and beverage companies, including a wide range of brewing applications as well as handling products like fruit puree.”

Whether it is handling sensitive yeast or abrasive diatomaceous earth, Bredel CIP pumps are an ideal choice for breweries for:

  • Yeast dosing
  • Yeast transfer
  • Flavour and colour dosing
  • Diatomaceous earth dosing for filtration
  • Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) and silica gel dosing for stabilisation

As part of Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions, Bredel continues to lead the technology in hose pumps, delivering low-maintenance, sustainable performance to food and beverage, mining, industrial and water markets.

About us

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) peristaltic tube and hose pumps meet requirements including: value for money; low cost of ownership; reliability and ease of maintenance to the food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and many other industries.

We demonstrate how pumps deliver significant process efficiencies over the lifetime of the equipment. Whether performing flavouring addition in food processing, chemical metering in water treatment or mineral recovery, we have a solution which can cut pump downtime and reduce costs through higher accuracy metering and transfer. WMFTG has dedicated application engineers available to help customers make the right pump and tubing choice from a range providing microlitres per minute to 80 cubic metres per hour flow rates.

The only part of the pump to come into contact with the product is the tube or hose. This means there are no seals or valves that can wear or fail. Replacing the tube or hose can be performed quickly and safely. Peristaltic pump benefits include:

Total fluid containment with no seals No ancillaries Handle viscous and abrasive slurries and sludge Self-priming capability Dry running without damage to the pump In addition to their range of positive displacement pumps, Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group has added PTFE-lined chemical and industrial hoses to their range. Aflex hoses are reinforced to withstand the most severe conditions and use.
