Monitoring of pollution levels derived from traffic

Listen to this article

Since 1995, under the Environment Act, all local authorities in the UK have had a legal requirement to carry out reviews and assessments of air quality in their areas.

The National Air Quality Strategy introduced in 1997 set standards and objectives for eight main pollutants known to be harmful to human health.

Many local authorities now have a requirement for higher density local monitoring of pollution levels derived from traffic, assisted by systems designed to meet the specific requirements of air quality professionals, such as those designed by Casella.

The urban locations of these units require compact, rugged, but low-maintenance systems that can provide reliable accredited data in a stand-alone operation. Many of the systems can also be incorporated into traffic management and control schemes.

Units can be designed to suit any customer application from single analyser units  to larger units housing up to 3 gas analysers, TEOM or BAM units, together with calibration gas cylinders and air conditioning.

In response to increasing legislation and demand for localised data, many local authorities now also have an obligation to undertake regular ambient noise monitoring for large projects and regional noise mapping purposes.

The latest roadside monitoring systems from Casella Monitor uniquely combine ambient gas and particulate measurement capabilities with the ability to monitor ambient noise simultaneously, so providing authorities with both sets of data at one fell swoop.

Ambient noise monitoring is now also an available additional option on Casella’s roadside monitoring enclosure (ROMON) units.
