EDDY CURRENT SEPARATORS SUITABLE FOR PET RECYCLING

Listen to this article

Goudsmit Magnetic Systems BV in Waalre,  the Netherlands, in cooperation with a large French PET Recycler in France, has recently developed a 1000 mm Eddy Current separator, suitable for an aluminium separation from plastic PET-flakes (PET =Polyethylene terephthalate).

This is an Eddy Current with an off-centre, extra strong magnet rotor that achieves a high rotational frequency as well as a super sharp guided vane. This ensures that the separator can process a relatively high capacity and also removes small aluminium particles from the flow. The iron particles are thrown out in advance by a powerful magnetic drum (range: approx. 9000 Gauss).
PET-flakes are grinded small and flat pieces of plastic with a dimension smaller than 10 mm. The iron and aluminium particles are also reduced with the reduction of the flakes. The objective is to make the flake pure and to re-use them in this manner to create PET-pellets for the final production of new PET products (mainly bottles). The ferrous and non-ferrous pollution in the PET product originate mainly from the flexible packaging industry. For example, aluminium covers of yoghurt cups or steel springs from spray bottles.
Eddy Current separators mainly separate non-ferrous metals like aluminium and yellow metals (copper, brass etc). However, stainless steel and copper wire should be separated by an inductive sensor separator; this is also included in the delivery program of the company.
