SEEPEX PUMPS HANDLE NaOCL METERING CHALLENGES
Seepex progressive cavity pumps have replaced unreliable, high maintenance diaphragm pumps at Californian water treatment plants for the pumping, metering and dosing of NaOCL solutions. Four years on the seepex PCP pumps used for NaOCL and NH3 metering have proved virtually trouble free and highly economical.
Staff at the Zone 7 Water Resources Agency in Alameda County, California initially switched to seepex PCP pumps for handling aqueous ammonia and sodium hypochlorite solutions after experiencing repeated maintenance problems with compl
icated diaphragm pumps prone to vapour lock and shut downs. Following this initial success, Zone 7’s Water Facilities Supervisor explored and then commissioned PCP pumps for metering a chloramine solution at the Companies wells. Pumps similar to the NaOCL pumps were specially designed with stainless steel internal components and EPDM elastomers to cope with the chemicals involved. Zone 7 immediately found the seepex PCP’s simple to use and preferable as they can pump against high pressure without pulsation, which previously had been a constant problem with the diaphragm pumps.
Four years on all the PCP used for NaOCL and NH3 metering have been running virtually trouble free. As a result Zone 7 have since installed additional seepex metering pumps to dose on-site generated 0.8% NaOCL solution to handle increased demand during months of high water usage. Alameda County now has 19 seepex metering pumps in their district with further pumps planned for the future.
