ABB EXTENDS TEMPERATURE RANGE WITH TUV CERTIFIED SIL2 TRANSMITTER

Listen to this article

ABB has extended its range of HART temperature transmitters with the addition of a dual-compartment version. Like the other transmitters in the range, the new TTF350 offers independent SIL2 certification from TUV, ranking it among the safest transmitters on the market.

The dual-compartment field housing enables the transmitter electronics to be mounted remotely from the sensor, making the TTF350 especially suitable for heavy-duty applications in industries such as oil and gas, power, cement, waste incineration and chemical processing. The housing, which can be in aluminium or stainless steel, offers protection to IP 66 / 67, NEMA 4X and ENCL 4X.

SIL2 certification specifies a probability of failure on demand of 0.01 – 0.001. ABB transmitters achieve this using redundancy, so the TTF350 will automatically change to a redundant sensor on detection of a failed sensor. This makes it more reliable than similar transmitters, which is particularly important in safety-critical applications. It also allows users to hold off replacing a failed sensor until a convenient and cost-effective time.

The TTF350 is intrinsically safe in accordance with ATEX, Ex ia, FM and CSA and is approved for use in ATEX zone 0 explosive atmospheres. It also offers extended diagnostic functionality according to Namur NE107, the German standard governing self-monitoring and diagnosis of field devices. This provides information such as reports of broken wires or corroded connections, allowing for preventive maintenance. Fault signalling is via HART, allowing more interrogation of the device for specific data or an ABB-specific maintenance requirement pulse, which can be read by ABB control systems such as the 800xA.

With a temperature measuring range of -50C to +85C, the TTF350 is accurate to 0.1K, thanks to sensor-transmitter matching and routines for one-point and two-point calibration. It also offers drift detection, which enables it to monitor the difference between the values from several sensor elements and warn users if the difference exceeds the configurable drift limit.

Other on-board diagnostics information include device error, over/under alarm limits, over/under measuring range, drift monitoring, supply voltage undershoot and ambient temperature undershoot and overshoot.

Operating data is easy to read via the transmitters high-definition display. Its also easy to access, since the TTF350 uses the same common interface platform as ABBs flow and temperature transmitters. Outputs can be either through a 2-wire technique, 4 … 20 mA temperature linear signal or HART signal, which allows more varied data to be sent.

These easy to install ABB transmitters incorporate easy-guide cable entries and large terminal blocks.

Featuring two independent inputs, with 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire sensors, the TTF350 can use either an internal or external reference junction for thermocouple measurement. Inputs can also be from a resistance-remote signalling unit (0 … 5000 ?) or through voltages from a mV transmitter. This gives operators more flexibility to use both types of input without the need to have two different transmitters, thereby reducing costs.

The transmitter offers a choice of measuring modes – absolute value, differential value and average value. Average value allows the transmitter to take the average reading of two sensors, improving accuracy, while differential value allows, for instance, readings to be taken from a sensor inside a tank and one outside. Any change in the external temperature that would affect the internal temperature of the tank can then be taken into account and action taken to cool the tank contents before the temperature rise becomes critical.

The TTF350 is the high-end model in ABBs TTx300 HART family of temperature transmitters
