Pressure Measurement Helps Wessex Water Detect Leaks Early
In modern sewer networks, accurate pressure measurement is essential for maintaining operational efficiency, protecting the environment and reducing maintenance costs. Small leaks and hidden pipe failures can remain undetected for long periods, leading to significant repair costs and potential environmental damage.
To improve its pressure monitoring capabilities, Wessex Water selected the VEGABAR 28 pressure transmitter from VEGA’s BASIC series. The installation demonstrates how modern pressure instrumentation can help network operators identify problems earlier and improve asset management across wastewater infrastructure.
Meeting the Challenges of Sewer Network Monitoring
Sewer networks present demanding operating conditions for measurement equipment. Instruments must function reliably in damp, flood-prone environments and often within confined spaces. Traditional sensors can be difficult to configure, may require extensive maintenance and can struggle to provide the accuracy needed for early fault detection.
Pressure monitoring plays a critical role in identifying developing issues. Sudden pressure drops can indicate a burst pipe, whilst gradual pressure loss may signal leaks or deteriorating seals. Detecting these changes quickly enables operators to respond before problems escalate.
When reviewing potential solutions, Wessex Water required a pressure monitoring system that combined accuracy, reliability and durability with straightforward installation and operation.

Modern pressure instrumentation enables early detection of leaks in sewer networks.
Robust Design and Fast Commissioning
The VEGABAR 28 was selected because it combines advanced pressure measurement technology with ease of use. One of the key advantages for Wessex Water was the speed of commissioning, with setup typically taking around two minutes.
An integrated simulation mode allows engineers to test configurations on-site, reducing installation time and minimising downtime. This simplifies deployment whilst helping maintenance teams work more efficiently.
Designed for harsh environments, the transmitter features an IP68 protection rating, enabling it to withstand flooding and complete submersion. Its robust ceramic measuring cell delivers reliable long-term performance, reducing maintenance requirements and helping lower total cost of ownership.
The sensor also offers a high measurement frequency of 166 measurements per second, allowing operators to monitor transient hydraulic effects and identify even minor pressure variations that could indicate developing leaks.

Bluetooth-based pressure sensor technology: Parameterisation and monitoring of the pressure transmitter via an app greatly increases reliability and efficiency.
Smart Connectivity Improves Efficiency
Bluetooth connectivity is another important feature. Using the VEGA Tools app, engineers can access the transmitter, adjust settings and retrieve data remotely without entering confined spaces. Secure, encrypted communication enhances both safety and operational control.
The VEGABAR 28 was easily integrated into Wessex Water’s existing monitoring infrastructure, which already included VEGA EDM, level and flow measurement technologies. This created a unified monitoring system that simplifies maintenance planning and improves overall network visibility.

Delivering Measurable Benefits
Since installation, Wessex Water has experienced several operational advantages:
- Early identification of pressure deviations and leaks
- Reduced maintenance requirements through robust sensor design
- Faster installation and simplified commissioning
- Lower operating costs and improved long-term reliability
By detecting leaks and pipe failures earlier, the utility can minimise wastewater losses, reduce environmental risks and maintain service continuity.
As water companies face increasing demands for efficiency, sustainability and regulatory compliance, advanced pressure monitoring solutions are becoming increasingly important. For Wessex Water, the adoption of VEGABAR 28 has improved operational performance, enhanced safety and strengthened the long-term resilience of its wastewater network.
