Piston Air Motors Provide More for Less

Listen to this article

Electric motors are available in a bewildering variety of sizes, designs and output characteristics, but the piston air motor is currently growing in popularity for many applications.
Rugged reliability, slower running speeds, high starting torque and cost-saving air efficiency have made piston air motors the industry standard for applications such as paint stirring or food mixing. Hazardous areas are also prime sites for air motors as there is no danger of sparks.

Piston air motors stop and start with no ill effects and this ability makes them ideal for constant stop/start duties under load, perfect for the hazardous or sensitive environments found in hydrocarbon engineering, paper converting, wood working, food processing and pharmaceutical industries. Air motors are also in demand where magnetic fields and electro-magnetic interference are design issues – in MRI scanners or underwater use.
Thorite, the UK”s biggest independent distributor of pneumatic products and process systems, now stocks and supplies a full range of Huco Dynatork piston air motors. Thorite selected these motors as they provide the most efficient method of converting the energy stored in compressed air into motion, for the specific applications to which the air motor”s characteristics are best suited.
Thorite now provides customers with the widest choice in air motor technology, thanks to also stocking vane-actuated air motors from leading manufacturers, which come into their own for a wide range of different application requirements.
However, where piston air motors provide the most suitable solution their operating characteristics bring many benefits: Piston motors consume up to 80% less air than vane air motors, providing significant cost savings even at maximum torque. Dynatork”s free-floating pistons transmit maximum torque on start up that can be adjusted via a pressure regulator, with torque outputs of up to 550Nm being achievable using reduction gearboxes. Speed can also be finely adjusted and pulse counters can be specified to programme direction of rotation, speed and number of revolutions.
Piston air motors save energy, have very low noise levels, can operate in clean environments, can be ATEX approved and are so corrosion-resistant they can even be used fully submerged. No wonder they are regarded as combining the benefits of flexibility, reliability and cost efficiency in a uniquely user-friendly package.
Full details and advice on all air motors is available from Thorite”s Technical Department on freephone 0800 0345850 and their team of fully trained application engineers are always available to provide in-depth support. The units can be ordered from any of the company”s ten regional Sales & Service Centres in Blackburn, Bolton, Bradford, Doncaster, Huddersfield, Leeds, Rochdale, Sheffield, North Shields and Brierley Hill in the West Midlands with next day delivery.
