Dredging a Pointless Activity – Plastic Rainwater Tanks a Winning SolutionPlastic Rainwater Tanks – an alternative to Dredging

Listen to this article

Dredging is a pointless activity according to a coalition of environmental groups who are requesting that the Government scales down its preferred method of flood prevention. The Blueprint for Water Coalition is urging the Government to spend resources traditionally channelled into dredging on more effective, alternative flood-control methods.

According to Mark Lloyd of the Angling Trust, a member organisation of the coalition, instead of wasting money on dredging, the Government could spend the existing £2bn subsidies to drive real change in farming practices to improve water management throughout river catchments.

The coalition offers this warning as the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo arrived in Britain, bringing gale force winds and more heavy rain. In their report, ‘Dredging Up Trouble’ the coalition warns that scooping mud, weeds and sediment from stream and river beds can in some cases make downstream flooding worse, by releasing water too quickly downstream.

Many farmers did indeed take advantage of the torrential rain brought about by Gonzalo, by collecting and storing water as part of a rainwater harvesting solution. Water is channeled from farm roofs into dedicated rainwater tanks. Rotationally-moulded, UV-stabilised plastic water tanks store water safety, protected from the elements until it is required, be it for cleaning, watering or mixing purposes.
