Doing our level best for charity organisation Mercy Ships
Endress+Hauser donates five Micropilot radar level gauges to hospital ship
As an international charity with a mission to increase access to healthcare throughout the world, Mercy Ships works with host nations to help fill the gaps in the healthcare systems to serve the immediate medical needs of their population. To support this valuable organisation, measurement engineering specialist Endress+Hauser has donated five of its Micropilot radar level devices to its largest hospital ship, the Africa Mercy.
Mercy Ships docks in port cities by invitation of the government and conducts three to ten month periods of field service offering vital healthcare services and developmental programmes. All Mercy Ships services are provided free of charge to those in need.
During the course of annual maintenance work on the Africa Mercy ship, the largest in the fleet, the measuring systems of several of the on-board tanks had to be replaced. After being approached by Mercy Ships for help, Endress+Hauser was delighted to step in and donate five Micropilot radar level devices to provide reliable continuous tank level measurement to keep the ship up and running.
“Social responsibility is a core value of Endress+Hauser,” stresses Dr. Andreas Mayr, Director of Technology at Endress+Hauser’s level and pressure production centre in Maulburg, Germany. “Therefore, we were delighted to be involved with Mercy Ships and are helping this aid organisation through product sponsorship.”
Africa Mercy: the on-board hospital
This large floating hospital is subdivided into four areas: material/services, the six operating theatres, the intensive care unit and the general ward with a total of 78 beds. The capacity is designed for up to 7,000 surgical operations annually and offers accommodation to more than 450 volunteer crew members. The vital services performed include cataract removal/insertion of lenses, tumour removal, cleft lip and palate corrections and orthopaedic and gynaecological surgery. The hospital has a tomograph as well as x-ray equipment, a laboratory and a Nikon “Coolscope” for remote diagnosis. If required, diagnoses can even be transmitted to specialist physicians via an on-board satellite system!
