Environmental Award Success for Crown Oil’s Oil Recovery Work

Listen to this article

Crown Oil is celebrating winning the award for Environmental Contribution to Industry at the HazardEx awards in Harrogate on February 29.  This follows a flawless and carefully executed operation in which Crown Oil removed and recycled 6.4 million litres of gas oil from Derwent Power Station without spilling a single drop.  This required over 200 tanker movements.

General Manager Mark Andrews commented, “Transport and fuel oils are our core business, we strive to be responsible in the way we conduct the business and minimise our environmental impact in every way we can.  To win recognition for this is something of which all the team can be very proud.”

Few companies have the technical, commercial and logistical expertise to undertake oil recovery work on the scale of that done by Crown Oil.  Their Environmental Services Division carefully plans each recovery.  Pumping and transfer are monitored to prevent spillage and at the end tank residues are removed.  The tanks are then either cleaned and de-gassed in preparation for future use or dismantled and removed from site.  Crown Oil analyses the fuel recovered to assess its condition; re-blending if necessary before re-sale to the market.

“Power stations and large industrial gas users face changes following the end of the interruptible gas tariff,” explained Mark Andrews.  “These companies kept large stocks of reserve gas oil that are no longer needed but are deteriorating with time and may become an environmental hazard.”

Crown Oil takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. The company opened an environmentally friendly HQ just last year.  All fuel deliveries by the company are carbon offset.  Additionally, they offer red diesel users such as builders and plant operators options to totally carbon offset their fuel.  For combined heat and power (CHP) plant Crown Oil has a high grade bio-fuel derived from 100 per cent sustainable sources.  This enables users to collect maximum renewable obligation certificates (ROCs) to offset against other carbon producing activity.
