Hydrogen is increasingly seen as one of the main energy carriers of a cleaner world because of its ability to be converted into energy without emitting anything other than water. However, in order for hydrogen to be used within fuel cells, vehicles or industry, it first must be purified to a high degree.
While generating hydrogen through methane steam reforming or electrolysis, the gas produced contains impurities such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, oxygen and water. Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology is highly utilised in the removal of hydrogen from these impurities to purify it.
Pressure Swing Adsorption is a well-established process to separate gases by selective adsorption of certain gases. PSA finds widespread application in the separation of nitrogen or oxygen from air as well as in hydrogen purification. PSA systems offer an energy-efficient as well as cost-effective solution for gas-producing on-site facilities in industries.
Central to a PSA system is the pressure swing mechanism between two or more parallel adsorption vessels. This is utilized for on-going gas production and high energy efficiency. For example, in the production of nitrogen, filtered and dried compressed air is supplied to a vessel which contains molecular sieves which adsorb oxygen. The nitrogen is permitted to pass through as purified product, while the alternate vessel is regenerated by depressurisation and flushing.
To achieve maximum energy efficiency, a pressure equalization step transfers gas from the pressurized saturated tank to the regenerated vessel before starting the subsequent cycle. This ensures stable system operation and reduces energy consumption.
GEMÜ offers a wide variety of valve technologies specifically designed for PSA systems. From heavy-duty globe valves built for high switching frequency, through modular systems optimized for space-saving installation, GEMÜ provides turnkey solutions ensuring reliable, long-term operation.
Its complete solution comprises valves, measurement equipment and control systems – all provided by a single proven source. Pneumatically controlled valves may be delivered with factory-mounted and tested positioners or process controllers for instant installation as plug-and-play packages. This reduces on-site installation time, simplifies logistics and minimizes documentation needs.
GEMÜ valve solutions augment each stage of the PSA cycle to enable:
GEMÜ components are built to provide high performance levels in the areas of durability, switching speed, medium compatibility and precise control for seat valves, diaphragm valves, non-return valves or flow meters. Their established materials and modular construction make them compatible for use with hydrogen, oxygen or carbon dioxide.
Pressure Swing Adsorption systems offer a strong and renewable solution for on-site gas generation and purification. Their continuous operation with low energy consumption makes them suited for many industries, from chemical manufacturing to energy storage.
