Record EntrieLeeds Manufacturing Festival Awards Draw Unprecedented Entries as Industry Supports Young Talent
Manufacturers emphasize long-term career paths amid rising youth unemployment concerns.

This year, the Leeds Manufacturing Festival Awards have received an impressive number of nominations, highlighting the manufacturing sector's ongoing dedication to nurturing young talent, especially when many industries are facing a drop in entry-level job opportunities.

The awards saw 45 nominations from 19 manufacturing firms, up from 38 entries by 18 companies last year. Organizers believe this increase showcases a growing acknowledgment of manufacturing's vital role in offering sustainable, skilled, and long-term career paths for young individuals.

In 2026, two new award categories—Graduate of the Year and Mentor of the Year—will be added, further emphasizing the importance of skills development, career advancement, and mentorship in cultivating the next generation of industry professionals.

These awards are part of the larger Leeds Manufacturing Festival, an initiative aimed at reshaping outdated views of manufacturing and engineering careers while highlighting the wide range of opportunities available in the sector.s for Leeds Manufacturing Festival Awards

Ben Wilson, the Managing Director of MPM Group and the voice of the festival, shared his thoughts:

“The sheer quality and number of entries this year have been incredibly uplifting, showcasing the remarkable talent emerging in the manufacturing and engineering sectors throughout our region.

“What really stands out is the ambition and professionalism displayed by so many young individuals stepping into the industry. Employers are telling us that their apprentices, graduates, and other bright young talents are bringing fresh perspectives, embracing new technologies, and quickly moving into leadership positions.

“However, it’s disheartening to see that many young people are still struggling to find opportunities. With youth unemployment on the rise and nearly a million young individuals across the country not engaged in education, employment, or training, it’s crucial to highlight that the manufacturing sector can provide secure, fulfilling, and highly skilled career paths.

“One of the biggest hurdles our industry has faced over the years is outdated perceptions. The truth is far more exciting. Modern manufacturing is innovative, driven by technology, and brimming with opportunities for career advancement. The response to this year’s awards clearly shows that more talented young people than ever are recognizing these opportunities and opting for careers in the field.”

Wilson continued:

“The Leeds Manufacturing Festival Awards hold significant importance as they honor the many exceptional individuals thriving in the industry here in Leeds, offering inspiring role models for those who may not have previously considered manufacturing as a viable career path.”
