Memdos Smart: dosing pump with precision water treatment
According to the United Nations World Water Development Report, population growth, urbanization and economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa have created a many-fold water demand far surpassing the capacity of the prevailing infrastructure in most nations.
As a result, vast parts of the population face endemic water scarcity. Lutz-Jesco is confident that innovations in technology are an important key to the expansion of water infrastructure and will feature a few of these at IFAT 2025, the Johannesburg environmental technology fair from 8 to 10 July (hall 3, stand B021h).
At IFAT 2025, Lutz-Jesco will present its new generation Memdos Smart stepper motor diaphragm dosing pump. Designed for dosing chemicals in water treatment processes – including flocculants, sanitisers and pH regulators, the pump is suitable for use in waterworks, industry and hospitality applications. At its core is a microprocessor-controlled stepper motor that increases the priming rate to shorten the vacuum phase and minimize pulsation in the feed stream.
“Standard motor pump operators have previously often had to invest in expensive items such as pulsation dampers in order to place this unwanted effect in its place“, adds Steffen Roth, Lutz-Jesco GmbH Head of Development. “This renders Memdos Smart an inexpensive alternative that conserves investment.”.
Available in two sizes, the Memdos Smart offers dosing rates from 2.6 to 182 l/h at pressures of up to 20 bar. A 3.5-inch touch screen allows for easy control and monitoring, while digital inputs and outputs and an Ethernet interface allow integration into higher-level control systems. The compact size of the pump, with a detachable foot and mounted rotated display option, allows easy integration into dosing systems.
Also shown will be the Topax MC multi-channel controller, designed to make water treatment processes easier through monitoring of key parameters such as chlorine residual, pH, REDOX potential, and conductivity. The controller manages dosing pumps via digital and analogue outputs (0/4–20 mA and relay/optocoupler) to provide stable water quality.
Its networking capability allows users to see measurement data and device diagnostics in a web browser or to transfer it to remote maintenance sites.
“The Topax MC's network capability has a distinct benefit, especially in the environments of Africa“, says Roth. “The efficient utilization of the system in remote areas or in areas with a shortage of personnel provides the possibility of deploying maintenance personnel in a far more economical and selective manner.”
Finally, Lutz-Jesco will unveil its C 2214 vacuum regulator at IFAT 2025, which increases safety when evacuating chlorine gas, hydrogen chloride, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide from gas cylinders. The vacuum regulator is installed directly on the cylinder and connected to a vacuum line system.
Upon a leak, which causes loss of negative pressure, the unit automatically switches off in order to prevent uncontrolled venting of gases. If there is too much positive pressure, there is a safety blow-off valve installed, which releases gas safely through a special outlet.
“With the self-shutoff mechanism and integral safety blow-off valve of the C 2214 vacuum regulator, safety is even greater, even where the provision of training and technical support may be under constraints“, notes Roth. “The system is thus especially well suited for use in water treatment systems operated under the severe conditions found in much of Africa.”.
The Lutz-Jesco IFAT 2025 stand is centered around how cutting-edge dosing, monitoring and protection technology can help make reliable and sustainable water treatment facilities accessible in sub-Saharan Africa.
