When the University of Exeter hosted its Summer 2011 Graduation Ceremonies, the estates department turned to Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power and temperature control solutions, to provide its cooling requirements during the high profile week long event.

Due to ongoing major refurbishment work at the university”s Streatham Campus, the 2011 graduation ceremonies were held at the Northcott Theatre on the campus, which has no air conditioning. The university required a professional temporary temperature control solution for the stage and auditorium of the 466 seat venue to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of the 4,400 students, plus thousands of visiting dignitaries, family and friends who attended 27 separate graduation ceremonies.

Aggreko”s event experts and engineers worked with the University”s maintenance and services department to ensure that the temporary cooling provision was delivered to a strict timetable for the four ceremonies each day. Aggreko designed the system and implementation programme to achieve a constant temperature of 20C inside the theatre.

Mike Brookes, maintenance and services engineer at the University of Exeter said, “The annual Summer Graduation Week is the highest profile event at the university and it is imperative that the complex timetable of events runs smoothly to give thousands of graduates and visitors the best possible experience and comfort during the ceremonies. The Aggreko team focussed on providing us with a solution to ensure that the entire event ran smoothly and their implementation certainly lived up to their promise. It is thanks to their expertise and project management skills that the 2011 event went seamlessly, with even the Chancellor Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE expressing how pleased she was.”

Steve Facey, sales engineer from Aggreko, said, “The successful delivery of a cooling solution incorporating design, installation and commissioning, highlights the quality of the full project management service provided by Aggreko and its skilled and knowledgeable team.”

Aggreko”s solution incorporated water cooled chillers with pumps positioned outside the building and connected into the building”s existing ductwork to feed chilled rather than ambient air into the auditorium. Fan cooled units were located inside the theatre to maintain a comfortable temperature on the stage, using insulated hoses to prevent condensation. Chilled water was also pumped into the theatre”s pipe work to provide additional chilling capability. Aggreko also supplied generators to power the equipment and provided fuel management throughout the Graduation Week.
