The £6bn Skills Drain: What Losing Manufacturing Workers Is Really Costing The UK
The UK is grappling with a significant skills gap in manufacturing, which is costing the economy billions in lost productivity. However, simply ramping up recruitment efforts won’t cut it. Manufacturers need to focus on building dedicated training facilities to nurture and keep skilled workers.
According to the 2025 Industrial Strategy Skills Commission report from Make UK, the sector is facing a staggering 55,000 long-term vacancies, leading to an estimated £6 billion in lost output each year. Plus, there’s been a 42% drop in manufacturing apprenticeship starts since the Apprenticeship Levy was introduced.
The 2024 Employer Skills Survey from the Department for Education revealed that 34% of manufacturing vacancies are due to a lack of qualified candidates, underscoring the ongoing struggle to find the right talent.
But it’s not just about hiring; manufacturers also need to tackle the challenge of providing consistent induction and technical training without interrupting production. Limited training spaces and a shortage of experienced trainers can further hinder workforce development and the integration of automation technologies.
Greg Wood, Head of Manufacturing at Portakabin, points out that having the right training environments is crucial for helping new employees acquire skills, boost productivity, and stay with their employers.
On-site training facilities present a practical solution for manufacturers, allowing training programs to run smoothly alongside production. Modular buildings can expand capacity while keeping installation time and operational disruptions to a minimum.
For instance, Sparrows Engineering and Operations collaborated with Portakabin to set up six modular buildings at their training center near Aberdeen in just three days, creating a 400m² facility that includes training areas, a simulator room, and essential amenities like a canteen and restrooms.
While reforms in apprenticeships and educational initiatives are vital, investing in robust training infrastructure can empower manufacturers to enhance workforce skills, foster employee growth, and support long-term success.
