Emerson and Logtek automate subsurface data workflows with AspenTech Geolog
Emerson has been selected by Norway-based subsurface data company Logtek AS to modernise and automate its subsurface data workflows using AspenTech Geolog, part of Emerson’s AspenTech Subsurface Science & Engineering (SSE) portfolio.
The software is intended to help Logtek accelerate petrophysical analysis, improve operational efficiency and support faster exploration and production (E&P) decision-making for upstream operators.
Logtek provides quality control, data management, regulatory reporting and petrophysical analysis for major upstream operators across the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Its work involves interpreting subsurface well data and ensuring that information is accurate, organised and available for E&P decision-making.
Following a technical evaluation, Logtek selected AspenTech Geolog to replace a legacy third-party software system. The move will allow the company to integrate more closely with its internally developed solutions while supporting more automated workflows and custom scripts.
Automating subsurface analysis
AspenTech Geolog will allow Logtek to deliver existing and new well log data with faster turnaround times and greater operational efficiency. The platform provides tools for petrophysical analysis and is designed to handle large multi-well and multi-user datasets within a single project.
For upstream operators, improving the use of existing subsurface data is becoming increasingly important as the availability of new exploration opportunities changes. More efficient analysis of historical and newly acquired well data can help identify potential opportunities without relying solely on new exploration activity.
“Logtek upholds high-quality well data accuracy standards for its customers,” said Lars J. Fjell, chairman of the board at Logtek. “To successfully optimise our internal solutions, we needed a tool with the right balance of sophisticated technical features and flexibility, allowing us to continue delivering the high-quality data we are known for, with greater efficiency and automation. Working closely with Emerson will allow us to strengthen data precision and operational efficiency in a way that will help our customers with stronger E&P decision-making.”
The ability to integrate AspenTech Geolog with Logtek’s existing software and internally developed solutions was a key consideration in the selection. Automated processes and custom scripting capabilities are intended to reduce manual intervention while allowing Logtek to retain the workflows and applications required by its customers.
Supporting open subsurface data standards
Interoperability and data management are also central to the deployment. The AspenTech SSE portfolio, including AspenTech Geolog, is developed in alignment with the OSDU Data Platform, an open-source reference architecture for managing and accessing energy industry data.
For upstream organisations working across large datasets and multiple applications, open data standards can help reduce barriers between systems and improve access to information. Alignment with OSDU is intended to support greater interoperability and data management across Logtek’s subsurface workflows.
Logtek and sister company Petroware have also carried out proof-of-concept projects with major energy companies in Norway to examine how OSDU can be implemented to improve data management, collaboration and operational efficiency.
AspenTech Geolog’s ability to work with large multi-well and multi-user datasets provides a common environment for subsurface projects. This can help teams integrate data from existing solutions while improving collaboration and the delivery of analysis to upstream customers.
Using existing data to identify new opportunities
The deployment reflects a wider move within upstream operations towards extracting greater value from existing subsurface information. As exploration becomes more data-intensive, the ability to organise, analyse and reuse well data efficiently can influence how quickly potential opportunities are identified and assessed.
“Maximising the value of existing subsurface data has become essential for upstream operators navigating today’s industry challenges,” said Vikas Dhole, senior vice president of modelling and optimisation with Emerson’s Aspen Technology business. “Doing this well requires high-quality, exact data that can be used to uncover new exploration opportunities. Logtek’s industry leadership in ensuring access to high-quality petrophysical data, combined with Emerson’s advanced automation capabilities, will give Logtek customers an important advantage in using data to advance their business.”
By combining Logtek’s subsurface data expertise with AspenTech Geolog’s automation and data capabilities, the implementation is intended to improve the speed and consistency of petrophysical workflows while supporting interoperability with wider E&P data environments.
For Logtek’s upstream customers, the result is intended to be faster access to reliable subsurface information and more efficient analysis across multi-well projects, supporting better-informed exploration and production decisions.
