Penny + Giles introduces two CAN bus interface versions of its popular contactless rotary position sensor

Listen to this article

Penny + Giles – a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and designer and manufacturer of high precision sensing technology – has continued the development of its SRH500 range of contactless rotary position sensors with the introduction of two CAN bus interface versions.

The SRH520CN is a development of the company’s existing SRH501/2P model. It integrates additional electronics to provide either J1939 or CANopen options according to ISO/DIS 11898. Both versions also feature a 14 bit non-contact Hall effect sensor offering 0.022° resolution.

Historically, position sensors were connected indirectly to CAN networks via analogue input/output (I/O) modules. More recently however, an increasing number of position sensors with integrated CAN interfaces have been developed which, like the Penny + Giles SRH520CN, avoid cost-intensive I/O or gateway modules.

The J1939 version of the rotary position sensor is factory programmed by Penny + Giles to offer Direction, Baud Rate, Node ID and Frame Rate parameters. The CANopen version offers either Baud Rate or Node ID parameters, but is customer configurable to the CIA standard DS 301 protocol and supports the device profile for DS 406 encoders.

Both CAN bus interface models have shaft side protection to IP69K; a minimum IP67 protection to the rear when the M12 mating connector is attached and fully engaged; and operate from a 9 to 30Vdc unregulated supply. OEMs can also specify the output in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction.

Like the model it is based on, SRH520CN sensors are offered in a marine-grade aluminium housing with 87.5mm diameter flange and 12mm diameter shaft; and are designed to meet the harsh operating requirements of heavy duty industrial position sensing applications including construction, agricultural, military and utility vehicles; as well as a variety of uses in steelworks, marine equipment and power generating plants.
