ABB SM500F ensures transparent production for Ferndale Foods

Kent-based Ferndale Foods has enhanced the traceability of its cooking processes thanks to the installation of ABB SM500F videographic recorders.

Specialising in pre-packed food, Ferndale foods has installed five SM500F videographic recorders at its manufacturing plant in Erith. The new recorders have been introduced to record the temperature and frequency data of the company’s ‘cooking-cooling’ processes.

Ferndale foods were looking for a reliable and user friendly way of collecting their data in order to strengthen their quality control measures and to still comply with due diligence guidelines.

Mark Simmons, engineering manager at Ferndale Foods says, “One of our suppliers had fitted an SM500F onto a cooking vessel we had delivered. After experiencing first hand how easy to use yet informative the device was we decided to order them for all of our processes.”

The SM500F is a field mounted electronic data recorder that can be installed anywhere, taking recording out of the control room in to the process environment, offering users localised access to operational data.

The recorders enable Ferndale Foods to continuously track what is happening in each process and allows them to conveniently store data for future reference. In a highly regulated industry the recorders offer efficient and constant transparency whilst reducing incidents of wastage due to product irregularities.

“The data collected is downloaded onto our server where the quality assurance team regularly monitor it”, says Mark. “We now use this information to ensure we can retain a high product quality and then archive records for future reference without the storage issues you would associate with paper-chart recorders.”

Fully compliant with the FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration) 21 CFR Part 11 regulations concerning electronic process data collection, the SM500F is ideal for any installation where local indication and recording of process conditions is needed. Typical applications for the device include cold storage, temperature and humidity monitoring, effluent monitoring, borehole abstraction and building management systems. Its fully sealed IP66 and NEMA 4X enclosure provides full protection against water and dust ingress making it ideal for hosedown and dirty applications.

“A key benefit of the SM500F is its ease of use”, says Martin Binney, R&C product manager. “The SM500F has an exceptionally user-friendly display and interface meaning that setting up and operation can quickly be mastered.  The unique field mountable design of the SM500F means that installation costs are significantly reduced.  The expense of a panel associated with installing a traditional recorder is not required as the SM500F can be mounted to a wall or pipe. ”

Front-mounted pushbuttons allow simple selection of data, which is presented in a familiar Windows™ environment. Set-up and commissioning is also straightforward, with menus presenting options for setting and fine-tuning operating parameters. Added support is provided by an extensive context sensitive online help feature. As with other members of the ScreenMaster recorder series, the SM500F can be connected to an Ethernet network for data backup, remote access and email notification whenever an alarm occurs to ensure that any potential problems are promptly addressed.

Commenting on the success of the instruments Simmons says, “ABB’s SM500F has been a tried and tested success for us. It has made life a lot easier and offers us consistent peace of mind. Any new processes that we introduce will be monitored by the SM500F as standard.”
