SEMBCORP TAKES CONTROL WITH AUTOMATIC PUMP TRAPS from SPIRAX SARCO
Two Spirax Sarco APT14 automatic pump traps have helped solve a serious control issue for Sembcorp, one of the UK’s leading industrial utilities and services companies.
Sembcorp’s shell and tube gas heater handles from 20 to 40 tonnes of gas per hour. The variable load on the heat exchanger would cause a pressure drop preventing condensate from escaping and cooling the system.
Sembcorp’s gas supply must be heated to 40oC to prevent it from freezing. Previously the only way to reach the required temperature was to open up the steam valve and let the surging steam push the condensate out, but this made it difficult to control the gas temperature.
The pump traps prevent the company’s gas heater from stalling by removing condensate in a controlled way, regardless of back pressure.
“Since we’ve installed the pump traps the improvement has been dramatic,” says Development Manager, Dr. Michael Capstick. “Prior to the new systems being installed the gas temperature varied widely, but the temperature control is now within 2oC of the set point.”
