Major Award for Watson-Marlow Recognises Business Excellence and Contribution to Region
Watson-Marlow Ltd, part of Watson-Marlow Pumps Group (which is owned by Spirax-Sarco plc), was awarded the prestigious PwC 2013 West of England Business of the Year Award (turnover £25M) at an awards ceremony in Bristol last week.
The awards scheme, sponsored by global professional services company PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and now in its 25th year, acknowledges various aspects of business achievement, such as financial performance, product and service innovation, business management, training, future prospects and contribution to the region.
Watson-Marlow Ltd is the world leader in the design and manufacture of peristaltic pumps and tubing. The judges were impressed by Watson-Marlow”s impressive financial performance – an average of 22% profit has been achieved over the last five years – as well as its commitment to both business and product innovation.
For example, the launch of the new Qdos range of chemical metering pumps has already made a significant impact on the business, with sales targets exceeded by 200%.
Nick Morgan, PwC tax partners and chair of the judges for this category, said: “Watson-Marlow impressed the judges with its historic growth trends, the pride and passion its people have for what they do and its future outlook based on continual investment in R&D and product innovation.”
Regional Contribution
The award also recognised Watson-Marlow’s contribution to the region (as one of Cornwall’s largest employers) and for its significant commitment to working with regional suppliers.
The company employs over 230 people at its headquarters in Falmouth, Cornwall and works with a network of local, high-technology development partners.
Watson-Marlow Ltd also supports local charities and foundations and has made over £100,000 of donations to local charitable organisations from its factory funds and parent company charitable funds. The company is also an active supporter of the Cornwall Community Foundation and its community-based activities.
Commenting on the award, David Cole, Managing Director of Watson-Marlow Ltd, said:
“This is fantastic news for our entire business and for Falmouth, too. Our growth is driven by solid market knowledge, product innovation, strong business management – and, of course, great people. This award is testament to the hard work of our dedicated and highly-committed staff. We are delighted that the judges could see this commitment to business excellence.”

About us
Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) peristaltic tube and hose pumps meet requirements including: value for money; low cost of ownership; reliability and ease of maintenance to the food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and many other industries.
We demonstrate how pumps deliver significant process efficiencies over the lifetime of the equipment. Whether performing flavouring addition in food processing, chemical metering in water treatment or mineral recovery, we have a solution which can cut pump downtime and reduce costs through higher accuracy metering and transfer. WMFTG has dedicated application engineers available to help customers make the right pump and tubing choice from a range providing microlitres per minute to 80 cubic metres per hour flow rates.
The only part of the pump to come into contact with the product is the tube or hose. This means there are no seals or valves that can wear or fail. Replacing the tube or hose can be performed quickly and safely. Peristaltic pump benefits include:
Total fluid containment with no seals No ancillaries Handle viscous and abrasive slurries and sludge Self-priming capability Dry running without damage to the pump In addition to their range of positive displacement pumps, Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group has added PTFE-lined chemical and industrial hoses to their range. Aflex hoses are reinforced to withstand the most severe conditions and use.
