A refrigerant dryer, or chiller, removes moisture from the gas sample by cooling it, so that water vapour condenses out of the sample as liquid water. A permeation dryer passes the sample over a selectively permeable membrane for moisture removal, transferring water through the membrane as a vapour so that condensate does not form during the drying process. This approach not only eliminates the problem of loss of soluble sample gas, but also removes the risk of damage to the gas analyser in cases where, as is the case with sulphur dioxide, the dissolved sample gas is acidic and capable of causing corrosion of the system.
