Emerson launches hazardous-area Rosemount QX1400 gas analyser

Listen to this article

Emerson has launched the Rosemount QX1400 Continuous Gas Analyzer, a hybrid gas analyser designed for natural gas quality monitoring, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) and other regulated process applications.

The Rosemount QX1400 combines laser-based and paramagnetic measurement technologies in a single analyser and is certified for use in hazardous areas. For Europe, certifications include ATEX II 2G Ex d IIB H2 T4 and IECEx Ex db IIB+H2 T4 Gb for the rest of the world. North American certification is expected by the end of 2026 for Class 1, Division 2, Groups B, C, D, T4.

The analyser extends Emerson’s Rosemount QX portfolio by bringing multicomponent gas measurement and hazardous-area certification together in a single platform.

Hybrid gas measurement for process applications

The Rosemount QX1400 uses paramagnetic detection for oxygen (O₂), while quantum cascade laser direct absorption spectroscopy is used to measure other gases.

The combination is intended to address applications where oxygen measurement is particularly important, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), carbon capture and underground storage (CCUS), ethylene purity and hydrogen purity. These applications can involve hazardous areas where conventional gas analysis systems may require additional protective measures.

The hybrid architecture also provides flexibility for different measurement requirements. Off-the-shelf configurations support multicomponent measurement of key regulatory gases including CO, CO₂, O₂, NO, NO₂ and SO₂, with configurations typically measuring between one and four gases. Additional gases including CH₄ and N₂O can also be measured.

“Gas analysis applications should not require users to choose between the measurement technology they need and the hazardous area installation their site demands. The Rosemount QX1400 brings complementary technologies together in one certified platform to simplify system design, while providing the measurements required for critical emissions, quality and purity applications,” said Dr. Beth Livingstone, global product manager, process gas, with Emerson’s measurement instrumentation business.

Hazardous-area certification simplifies installation

The hazardous-area certifications allow the Rosemount QX1400 to be installed in certain classified areas without additional protective measures such as explosion-proof or purged enclosures.

For process plant designers and operators, this can reduce the complexity associated with installing gas analysis equipment in hazardous locations. It can also provide greater flexibility when determining where the analyser is installed within a measurement system.

In some applications, the analyser can be positioned closer to the sampling point. Reducing the distance between the process and analyser can help lower installation costs while supporting more representative measurements by reducing the length of sample transport systems.

Applications requiring gas analysis in hazardous areas include CEMS installations, LNG facilities, chemical plants and petrochemical facilities, as well as other process operations where regulated emissions or gas quality and purity need to be monitored continuously.

Continuous monitoring of complex gas streams

The Rosemount QX1400 uses the high selectivity of laser-based measurement to monitor complex gas streams and provide continuous data for process and regulatory requirements.

Its modular design allows the analyser to be configured according to the gases and measurement requirements of a particular application rather than requiring separate analysers for different components. Emerson says the robust design and low maintenance requirements can also help reduce lifecycle costs and downtime.

For CEMS applications, the ability to measure gases including CO, CO₂, O₂, NO, NO₂ and SO₂ provides a platform for monitoring regulated emissions. In natural gas and chemical processing applications, the same technology can be configured for quality and purity measurements.

The Rosemount QX1400 therefore extends the QX analyser range with a combination of hazardous-area certification, hybrid measurement technology and flexible multicomponent gas analysis in a single system.
