North West Manufacturers Explore AI’s Role in Smarter Manufacturing
Manufacturers and technology experts gather in Burnley to tackle the opportunities and challenges of AI
Manufacturers from the North West came together at Safran Nacelles in Burnley to dive into how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance productivity in manufacturing, cut costs, and aid in digital transformation.
Nearly 50 attendees participated in Smarter Manufacturing: Using AI to Improve Productivity and Performance, an event organized by RTC North, Made Smarter North West, and Burnley Council as part of Burnley Business Week and Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day.
Industry representatives from aerospace, automotive, machinery, plastics, textiles, and printing engaged in discussions about practical AI applications, while also addressing challenges like skills shortages, data security, and the fast-paced evolution of technology.
Steve Wilkinson from RTC North urged businesses to concentrate on real-world applications instead of getting caught up in the latest tech trends.
He remarked, “There’s a lot of dabbling and playing going on, and that’s a good thing. It’s part of technology adoption. What really matters is identifying justified, meaningful applications that empower people in manufacturing to make quicker, better decisions.”
Hafferty Interiors, based in Salford, shared how support from Made Smarter North West has enabled them to explore AI applications and boost efficiency in their design processes. Meanwhile, MGS Plastics and Process Instruments discussed their journeys with AI adoption and the critical need for human oversight.
Safran Nacelles also presented its ongoing digital transformation efforts, which include AI, connected machinery, manufacturing execution systems, and automated inspection.
Michelle Hubel, Head of Digital Transformation at Safran Nacelles, emphasized the necessity of having reliable data, the right skills, and effective governance.
She stated, “We all think we’ve got good data until we actually start looking at it.”
Experts from Seriun, Door4, The AI Works, and Made Smarter urged manufacturers to kick off with small-scale AI projects that tackle real operational issues and provide tangible business advantages.
The event wrapped up with a fascinating tour of Safran Nacelles’ manufacturing facilities, showcasing how they integrate digital technology into aerospace production.
