UK Steel backs Government plan to acquire Speciality Steels UK

UK Steel has thrown its support behind the Government’s plan to acquire Speciality Steel UK (SSUK), calling this move a crucial step in safeguarding 1,300 jobs and bolstering essential manufacturing supply chains in the UK.

On September 14, 2026, the Government revealed its intentions for a public acquisition after determining that a private-sector takeover wouldn’t offer the long-term stability needed.

SSUK operates facilities in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth, and Wednesbury, providing specialized steel for industries like aerospace, defense, automotive, oil and gas, and advanced manufacturing. Their products play a vital role in critical applications such as aircraft landing gear, helicopter rotors, and artillery casings.

Even though SSUK entered liquidation in August 2025, its Stocksbridge, Bright Bar, and Thrybergh rolling mills have continued to operate, with production ramping up for external clients.

Additionally, funding has been allocated to help restart steel melting operations, with plans to get the company’s electric arc furnaces back in action by December 2026.

Gareth Stace, the Director-General of UK Steel at the time of the announcement, remarked, “SSUK is already well on its way to returning to full operations and reclaiming its vital role in UK supply chains.”

UK Steel believes that bringing SSUK’s production capacity back online could alleviate some of the pressure on steel import quotas, especially for categories 12B and 27, while also supporting the Government’s goal of boosting domestic steel production from around 32% of UK demand to between 40% and 50%.

The proposed acquisition aims to maintain strategically important steelmaking capabilities and allow time to create a sustainable future for the business.

UK Steel highlighted the necessity of securing long-term investment and experienced ownership to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of British steelmaking.
