The Canal & River Trust manages over 2,000 miles of waterways throughout the UK, focusing on effective water level management in canals, locks, and reservoirs. Historically, this task depended on hydrostatic pressure transmitters and ultrasonic sensors, which involved complicated installations and regular maintenance.
To improve operational efficiency and cut down on infrastructure costs, the Trust has adopted IIoT radar level sensors, like the VEGAPULS Air. These small, battery-operated devices provide accurate, real-time measurements and send data through NBIoT, LTE-M, or LoRa networks—removing the need for power supplies or wiring.
By swapping out traditional telemetry kiosks for wireless radar sensors, the Trust has significantly lowered installation time and expenses. For example, the VEGAPULS Air 42 checks V-notch flow levels every four hours, sending data for long-term trend analysis. With a battery life of up to five years, it presents a cost-effective, low-maintenance option, installed at a fraction of the cost of older systems.
