Emergency Chlorination Solution for Safer Drinking Water
Key points
Lutz-Jesco Exhibits SAFETYCHLORMIX during Tausendwasser 2025 in Berlin
What if the existing disinfection systems in waterworks become overwhelmed? To such critical situations, Lutz-Jesco offers the SAFETYCHLORMIX mobile emergency chlorination system.
The device will be shown at the trade fair Tausendwasser 2025 for water management from 26 to 27 March in stand 7.BP.29. Another Lutz-Jesco highlight is going to be a look at their latest development; the VakuStop safety shut-off valve contributes to safer chlorine gas handling practices.
Early Warning for Contaminated Water
Such sudden elevations in bacterial levels in drinking water-for example, heavy rainfall washing contaminants into a spring catchment chamber-require an immediate response from waterworks. The situation becomes even more urgent if bacteria develop within an intermediate storage tank and existing disinfection systems cannot cope with the problem.
“We developed SAFETYCHLORMIX precisely for these emergency situations” comments Christian Meyer, drinking water technology expert at Lutz-Jesco. “This mobile dosing system allows waterworks to act quickly and effectively by administering liquid chlorine with precision to prevent bacterial outbreaks.”
A Reliable Emergency Solution for Waterworks
Many municipal utilities, such as municipal utilities of major cities like Schwerin, Germany, already rely on the SAFETYCHLORMIX system. The system is also in operation not only at waterworks but also in applications, for example, in connection with Legionella contamination in high-rise buildings. “Currently, there is no other comparable system available on the market,” Meyer adds.
Ease of Transport, Plug-and-Play Operation
Designed for ease of use, SAFETYCHLORMIX is mounted on a sturdy tubular steel trolley, allowing a single operator to wheel it into position and begin emergency chlorination straight away. The system includes the Magdos LDp diaphragm dosing pump, which injects a calcium hypochlorite solution into contaminated water via a ten-metre PVC hose. The chemical releases hypochlorous acid (HOCl), an effective oxidising agent that eliminates microorganisms.
“The pump is known for its robustness, reliability, and low maintenance,” says Meyer. “Its magnetic drive system eliminates the need for wearing components such as gears or shafts.”
Chlorine Production up to 650 g/h
SafetyChlorMix can be fed with chlorine between 18 to 650 g/h and between 0.5 l/h to 15 l/h. The chlorine granulate is available in either 25-litre or 60-litre packages. To improve the safety factor of the system, it comes with a back-pressure valve, regulating line pressure and a pressure-relief valve preventing overpressure. Also, the leak into a polyethylene collection pan intercepts hazardous chemicals, thus prohibiting dispersion into the environment.
Introducing VakuStop: Increased Safety in Handling Chlorine Gas
Concurrent with SAFETYCHLORMIX, the second major novelty to be unveiled by Lutz-Jesco at Tausendwasser 2025 is the VakuStop safety shut-off valve. The device-when used in combination with a vacuum regulator-allows for significantly safer handling of chlorine gas cylinders.
Users can very conveniently attach the VakuStop to a gas cylinder valve and connect it to a gas warning device. The routine operation under the electromagnet sees the valve stay open and pass the chlorine gas.
In instances of a chlorine alarm, power failure, cable breakage, or a signal showing positive pressure, the system closes the valve immediately to shut off the gas flow.
Complete Safety in Large-Scale Systems of Chlorine – Safety Packages
For bigger chlorine gas installations, Lutz-Jesco offers an integrated safety package. A central control unit can be connected to up to twelve VakuStop valves, which ensures that all gas cylinders shut off simultaneously in the event of an alarm.
“VakuStop and our integrated safety system help waterworks continuously improve their chlorine gas handling procedures, reducing risks and enhancing operational safety,” Meyer says.
Considering that chlorine gas fumes may cause anything from eye irritation to acute, even life-threatening pulmonary oedema, such precautions are paramount for the protection of both workers operating in the surroundings and the general community.
Experience the latest from Lutz-Jesco: SAFETYCHLORMIX and VakuStop are two trendsetting solutions to make water treatment a lot safer and more effective.
