Listen to this article

The Chemical Business Association (CBA), the foremost representative of the chemical supply chain, is excited to announce the appointment of Alastair Sanderson as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Alastair comes with a wealth of experience from a notable 30-year career at Unilever, where he focused on Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), especially in the Home Care sector.

Alastair’s journey began with a First-Class Honours degree in Chemistry, followed by a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Salford in 1992. He then took on various senior Research and Development (R&D) positions at Unilever, including Senior Development Manager and Global Technology Manager, where he played a crucial role in product innovation and sustainability efforts.

A standout moment in his career was his leadership in developing Unilever’s “Carbon Rainbow” strategy. This innovative approach manages the carbon sources in the company’s product formulations, facilitating the shift towards Net Zero by minimizing dependence on non-renewable carbon sources. His work involved exploring the use of captured CO₂ and researching biogenic alternatives.

Alastair is also honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and holds the title of Chartered Chemist (CChem), highlighting his dedication to scientific advancement and environmental sustainability.

Strategic Vision for the Chemical Business Association

As COO, Alastair will assist CBA’s CEO, Tim Doggett, in managing the daily operations of the organization. His role will encompass strategic planning, performance management, and spearheading initiatives that improve the value and experience for CBA members.

Tim Doggett, CEO of CBA, shared his excitement about Alastair's appointment:

“I am thrilled to welcome Alastair to the CBA team on behalf of myself, our staff, and our members. His vast industry experience and strategic insight will be key in helping us maintain the highest standards of service and support for our members. Additionally, he will be vital in growing our membership by introducing innovative services and enhancing our industry knowledge.”

Alastair expressed his enthusiasm for joining the CBA, saying:

“I am truly honored to be part of the CBA, a well-respected trade association recognized throughout the chemical supply chain and the wider chemical industry as a premier resource. I am eager to work with my new colleagues to improve our service offerings and to advocate for the interests of the chemical supply chain on a global level.”

Driving Growth and Industry Leadership

With his extensive background in sustainability, R&D, and strategic leadership, Alastair is well-equipped to propel CBA’s ongoing growth and leadership in the industry.
