Essentra achieves zero waste to landfill with UK sites leading the way
Essentra Components, a world-leading producer of essential components and industrial solutions, has announced that 20 of its operational sites have now achieved zero waste to landfill – representing more than two-thirds (67%) of sites in scope.
Sites across the UK and US and in Monterrey (Mexico), Hengzhu and Ningbo (China) and Milan (Italy), all attained zero waste to landfill in 2024.
In total, Essentra diverted 95% of its solid waste and 96% of its liquid waste from landfill in the year. This supports the company's wider sustainability ambition for all relevant operational sites to be zero waste to landfill by 2030.
Mapping waste to eliminate landfill dependency
To realise this ambition, each Essentra site undertakes a thorough mapping of all waste streams, investigating the nature, volume, source and treatment needed. Waste is then segregated, recycled or composted based on the established waste hierarchy, rendering landfill disposal redundant.
At its Kidlington, Oxford, UK headquarters, Essentra has invested in equipment that allows the reprocessing and recycling of surplus polymer material from the production process. In excess of 50 tonnes of material were reused on site in 2024 alone, which saved on both production costs and emissions from material transport.
Composting and community reuse
In the meantime, sites like Chichester (UK) and Houston and Arkansas (US) have embarked on on-site composting of organic wastes. Compost generated has been re-used on site in gardens and also donated to local community garden initiatives, reducing additional landfill waste and enhancing local relationships.
Driving sustainability across global operations
Essentra's ESD Director, Jennifer Spence, highlighted the importance of landfill elimination in the company's environmental agenda:
“Zero Waste to Landfill is a company-wide commitment. Achieving this requires significant planning and resourcing to achieve and it’s testament to our team that we’ve been able to reach this milestone at sites across the globe.”
To maintain these high standards, each zero waste to landfill site will undergo annual third-party verification. Essentra remains on track for full compliance across all relevant sites by 2030.
