Solid Energy and Clayton develop high-temperature industrial steam heat pump
Solid Energy and Clayton Industries are collaborating to develop a high-temperature heat pump solution capable of producing industrial steam at pressures of up to 4 bar.
The partnership combines Solid Energy’s very high-temperature heat pump technology with Clayton Industries’ expertise in industrial steam generation. The companies aim to provide an electric alternative to conventional fossil-fuel-fired steam systems used across industrial processes.
Industrial steam remains a critical source of process heat for many manufacturing operations, with gas and oil still widely used to generate it. Electrification offers an opportunity to reduce fossil fuel consumption, but solutions must be capable of delivering the temperatures and performance required by industrial processes.
Under the collaboration, Solid Energy will provide its high-temperature heat pump technology for integration with a Clayton steam generation module. Solid Energy’s existing heat pumps can deliver flow temperatures of up to 165°C, with the new steam solution building on the same compressor technology and control architecture.
Jan Enemark, CEO of Solid Energy, said: “Industrial steam is one of the areas where electrification can make a very substantial difference. By combining our proven heat pump platform with Clayton’s steam expertise, we can offer industry a practical route to high-temperature steam with significantly reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
“Just as importantly, we have achieved the higher temperature capability by evolving technology that has already been proven in operation for many years.”
Levi Stenten, European CEO of Clayton Industries, said: “Our customers are increasingly looking for steam solutions that combine efficiency, reliability and a credible pathway to decarbonisation.
“This collaboration brings together two complementary technologies and areas of expertise. The result is a compelling solution for industrial sites seeking to replace or supplement conventional fossil-fuel-fired steam generation while retaining the performance their processes require.”
Clayton has developed industrial steam technology since 1930 and operates its European engineering and production hub in Bornem, Belgium. Solid Energy is a Danish manufacturer specialising in very high-temperature industrial heat pumps for recovering and upgrading heat in demanding industrial processes.
