ENERGY EFFICIENT WATER TREATMENT: THE ACWA APPROACH

Capture and transfer energy lost in the membrane reject stream

ACWA’s success in resolving energy issues is highlighted by a recent award to Palm Utilities, which received the Best Water Project Award during the Arab Investment Summit 2010 in Abu Dhabi in recognition of the use of a Dual Work Exchanger Energy Recovery (DWEER) system in ACWA’s seawater reverse osmosis plants at the prestigious Palm Jumeirah development.

Use of this innovative process, which captures and transfers the energy lost in the membrane reject stream, has enabled up to 19% power savings over the past 18 months since going into operation, which equates to over 3.3 million kilowatt-hours.

ACWA Managing Director, Peter Ripley says: “In an age when social and economic pressures mean utilities and companies must drive down their operating costs and become more sustainable, energy efficiency is a key yardstick of success.”
