Food centre finds new freezer fits the bill

Listen to this article

Ice cream research, development and training on a continuous production scale is now possible at Food Centre Wales (Canolfan Bwyd Cymru) following the installation of a Tetra Hoyer Frigus SF 300 C2 freezer, the latest model in the company”s continuous freezer range.

The Centre, near LLandysul in south west Wales, provides technical support for the Welsh food industry. Services include product development, assessment and production design.

The Centre”s dairy facilities have included batch freezers for ice cream but these were limited to around 18 litres per batch. For clients to work or train on the development of continuous production, a new freezer was required.

As Food Technologist Mark Horsman explained, a small continuous freezer was the next logical step:

“We already had continuous pasteurizing and homogenizing equipment, shared with a cheese and yoghurt making line. The SF 300 C2 is small enough for a research and development facility but large enough to enable larger commercial manufacturers, as well as small “artisan” ice cream makers, to carry out product development and training.

“We can now undertake a wider range of projects and help ice cream businesses, whether new or established, throughout Wales and further afield.”

David Hannah, Tetra Pak Processing Account Manager said:

“For the small to medium sized producer, our new Tetra Hoyer SF300 C2 is an attractive option. It is in the same price bracket as a batch freezer while ensuring excellent product consistency and higher quality.”

“It is fully integrated with existing Tetra Pak Processing equipment at the Centre, enabling producers to consider ways to optimize performance as well as recipe development and product appeal.”

The SF 300 C2 is the smallest, as well as the newest, freezer in the Tetra Hoyer Frigus range, giving a throughput of 180 – 300 litres/hr. Standard configuration includes straightforward, semi-automatic controls and a single piston pump.

Hygienic design means the unit can be cleaned without dismantling. The self-contained freezer incorporates a freon refrigeration unit and is sufficiently compact and portable to be moved to different production lines if necessary.
