FILTRATION TREATMENT FOR ADVANCED DIGESTION PLANT

Bollfilter installs automatic filtration systems at Afan AD Plant , Port Talbot

Welsh Water’s Afan AD (Advanced Digestion) Plant on the seafront at Port Talbot is one of two innovative and environmentally-friendly new sewage treatment sites in Wales that create electricity from waste.

The plant, which has been designed and installed by Imtech Process, uses a biological digestion process to create biogas from treated sewage sludge. The gas is stored under pressure and used to generate electricity, by means of a CHP plant, which is then fed into the National Grid. The treated sludge is also recycled to form a sterilised ‘cake’ which is used as a fertiliser.

Water extracted from the final effluent on site requires filtration before it can be used as part of the tertiary sludge treatment process and two Boll Filtration Systems have been installed on the site. One is used for coarse filtration and one for finer filtration. The fine filtration system is used to protect the UV Treatment Plant from particulates and prevent spray nozzles on the sludge thickeners from blocking – as well as for general dilution and washwater.

The Boll Filter Systems each comprise two Boll 6.18 Automatic Self-cleaning Filters operating as Duty and Standby.

Imtech Process and Bollfilter UK worked closely together throughout the commissioning stages and start up of the AD plant. Bollfilter service engineers also provided both Imtech Process and Welsh Water engineers with training for correct future maintenance. Prior to hand-over to Welsh Water, Bollfilter will return to site for a full service of both first and second stage filters, extending the filter warranty for a further twelve months.

Imtech Process’s Commissioning Engineer, who was responsible for commissioning the new Afan plant explains. “Cleanliness of the dilution water is critical for the whole treatment process, especially to maintain the right consistency of the finished ‘cake’. The automatic Boll filtration systems efficiently remove contaminants and, because they automatically back flush, require minimal cleaning or maintenance.”
