Why Liquid Valves Are Not All Made Equal

Listen to this article

Everyday liquid or fluid valves on the market today do the job of handling liquids; but when filling, micro dosing or controlling proportional flow is at the core of your business, it is the detail in the design that starts to matter.

A common scenario when fluid handling is a pneumatic valve controlling an actuator (effectively two units).  The actuator, in turn, opens and closes a channel for the liquid.  An improvement, in the form of directly operated liquid valves, appeared on the market offering a lighter, space saving solution.  Yet not all directly operated liquid valves are made equal.

For the customers looking for noticeably superior performance in terms of reliability of response time, speed and flow, and no leaks, then ‘balanced’ design and ‘high shifting forces’ become terms that really matter.

‘Balanced’ refers to the valve being pressure balanced, meaning the response time is unaffected by pressure variation.   â€˜High shifting forces’ from the solenoid and return spring, as designed into the MAC valve, results in fast and reliable operation and resistance to contamination.

There are two typical types – the single diaphragm (figure 1) and the double diaphragm (figure 2).  However, the design is such that a myriad of special variations can be built in, to suit a particular process to perfection.

For example, the liquid valve can be designed to pulse at rates to accurately control flow, while the single diaphragm has seals that lend themselves to all manner of application tailoring.  The technology is so standout that the range is named the liquid bullet® valve, so called because it looks like a bullet, while also emulating some of its potential high-speed characteristics.

The bullet valve technology has been developed by valve experts MAC Inc, with installation and engineering problem solving undertaken in the UK by PSI Technologies Ltd, sole UK agents for MAC.
