Guy's 'What's Coming Up'

A bi-monthly(ish) lighthearted insight into the world of PII's publisher Guy Ullmann's latest going's on, together with updates about PII and details of ‘What's coming up‘ in each issue

Hi and welcome to my July 2024 WCU!

Wow, so quite a lot has happened these last couple of months, where to start…!?

New government

It will be interesting to see how things materialise and effect the manufacturing sector with the new labour government, with a promise of a National Wealth Fund, job creation and business and trade union partnerships, only time will tell, but we wait in anticipation to see what happens on this new horizon.

Trump assassination

Since the assassination attempt there have been all kinds of conspiracy theories flying around, and of course memes, which I’m sure most WhatsApp groups have shared.

I’m really not sure what to think about it, it just seems a little too rehearsed, but that would be extreme even for Trump, but would we put it past him though…?

And then there were the Euros…
There were moments of pure joy, but overall if I’m honest, we rode our luck and the final was so disappointing, although I’m sure most of us would have taken another final at the beginning of the tournament, but to get there and again play so negatively is beyond frustrating. I think Adrian Durham on talkSPORT summed the final up perfectly:

My funniest moment of the tournament came in the BBC studio where Gary Lineker totally destroyed Frank Lampard – don’t worry Frank, I know the feeling 🙁

Birthday celebrations!

At the end of May, I celebrated turning 44 by visiting a friend in Dusseldorf.

I hadn’t been to Germany for many years, so I was excited to return and visit a new city.

The trip didn’t get off to the best of starts as I realised I made a bit of a boo boo with the booking; Dusseldorf Weeze is not exactly close to Dusseldorf, in fact how they can get away by adding ‘Dusseldorf’ to the airport name I have no idea!? So, a 1.5 hour coach journey and I finally arrived to the centre, but it then dawned on me my return flight left at 6.30am, ‘Rodney you plonker’ came to mind 🤦

However, the extended journey was certainly worthwhile and I was even blessed by the weather Gods which made for a fantastic trip.

On the way from the airport my coach was stuck behind this tractor which I thought delightful and a lovely welcome to a new environment.

Highlights included the Rhine Tower with spectacular views over the city, which in the evenings doubled up as a clock that took me an age to understand, Eltz Castle which is considered “the most beautiful castle in Europe”, Moselle Wine Valley with its picturesque towns along the river – especially Cochem and the Stadtmitte zone in the centre of Dusseldorf, great for a weekend evening of fun!

– Oh and the aptly named street toilets, is it just me that finds these amusing?

Electric review

The only negative part of the trip was the hire car. When collecting the car, the only one available was fully electric, which had a radius of 150km (or bugger-all in real terms driving down the autobahn!). We quickly discovered that you literally had to plan your entire day around where the charging stations were and not only that, but how powerful they were, it was a total nightmare and turned a 2 hour journey into a 5 hour one.

I had to get very creative when handing the car back, as because at some point I collected a scratch and of course the only time I don’t take the full insurance out this happens, always the way, right?

So I cleaned the scratch as much as I could and where there was a relatively large chip, I peeled off one of the many squashed flies from the windscreen and placed it delicately over the chip. To my astonishment it worked and my rather large deposit was returned in full – PHEW!

Here are a few of the highlights:

Barcelona 2024

As you may know by now I really love Barcelona and when the opportunity arose to see some of my favourite musicians there, I couldn't refuse… BUT I have to share my first experience of something with you….

Before travelling I was having a beer with a friend telling them about my trip and they suggested Why not try Tinder to meet some people there’.

I have never tried any of these types of apps before, however I thought it could be interesting to meet some fellow gig-goers, so for my sins I created a profile and to my shame started swiping
😬

After the umpteenth swipe right I quickly began to lose the will to live and really questioned how unattractive one can possibly be without a single sniff of a match, it was all very depressing.

I was literally about to delete the damn thing, when suddenly ‘ping' I received an alert for a match!

I excitedly opened the app where to my surprise a message from my lucky match was already in-waiting.

However, after reading it I was rather confused and had no idea what they meant, so I checked back on the profile…

It then hit me as I scrolled down to view their short description I clearly missed – I’m no linguist, however even the most British of non-linguistic people could understand this…

and their message now made sense, it read:

Are you a giver or receiver?

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

I have absolutely nothing against any gender or sexual preference of anyone, but sadly for this person, they were not my ‘ideal match’.

The moral of the story here – always read the small print.

There is also a romantic ending to this story…. (not involving the before mentioned person!)

Whilst I was away I did meet ‘someone’ who at this stage wishes to remain anonymous, but I am rather happy. I can say she is Swiss and the proud owner of one of the most adorable, biggest softies of a dog I’ve ever met, Vasco the very gentle Pitbull

– hopefully I’ll have more to update you about with my next newsletter… tbc 😉
