How Titan Enterprises supports Grinsty Rail with reliable rail de-icing system performance

In the rail industry, reliability is every bit as important as innovation. Rolling stock and infrastructure are expected to operate safely and efficiently for decades, making long-term component availability, engineering consistency and dependable performance essential. This is particularly true for safety-critical systems such as rail de-icing equipment, where precise fluid control helps maintain operational continuity throughout the winter months.

The long-standing partnership between Titan Enterprises and Grinsty Rail demonstrates how continuity of product design, security of supply and close engineering collaboration can deliver lasting value for the rail sector. By integrating Titan's FT2 radial turbine flowmeters into its vehicle-mounted de-icing systems, Grinsty Rail has achieved precise fluid control, dependable operation in harsh rail environments and, crucially, the ability to refurbish and extend the life of its systems without expensive redesigns.

The collaboration highlights the importance of working with a supplier that understands the demands of long-life infrastructure. Rather than continually changing products for the sake of innovation, Titan Enterprises focuses on maintaining proven technologies whilst introducing improvements only where they deliver genuine operational benefits.

The challenge: Supporting innovation across long-life rail assets

Rail operators continually face the challenge of modernising equipment whilst maintaining the reliability expected from assets designed to remain in service for many years. Every component integrated into these systems must deliver consistent accuracy and performance whilst remaining available throughout the asset lifecycle.

Grinsty Rail's vehicle-mounted de-icing systems play a vital role in keeping the railway network operational during severe winter weather. Installed beneath rail vehicles, these systems are subjected to constant vibration, extreme temperatures, moisture and demanding operating conditions that require highly robust engineering.

As a specialist in rail maintenance and rolling stock systems, Grinsty Rail recognised that selecting the right flow measurement technology would be critical to ensuring long-term system performance. The company addressed this requirement through a close working relationship with Titan Enterprises, a recognised manufacturer of precision flow measurement solutions. At the heart of this collaboration is a shared understanding that, in long-life rail applications, reliability extends beyond product performance to include long-term design continuity and dependable product availability.

The solution: Proven flow measurement technology integrated for long-term reliability

Grinsty Rail selected Titan Enterprises' FT2 turbine flowmeter technology to provide accurate and dependable flow measurement throughout its rail de-icing systems.

Colin Wood, Grinsty Rail's Operations Manager suggests: “The challenge was Grinsty needed a liquid flowmeter that was highly reliable to operate within our de-icing systems. The systems themselves are designed for longevity, often remaining in service for many years.”

For Grinsty Rail, Titan provides engineering stability, continued product availability and consistent design philosophy, all of which support long-term investment planning and system maintenance.

“Titan gives us the confidence that components specified today will still be available tomorrow and they understand the realities of long-life infrastructure,” continues Colin.

Each de-icing system incorporates a dual architecture, separating the electronics and control systems from the fluid handling and delivery components. Titan's FT2 flowmeters are installed within the fluid handling section, accurately measuring the volume of de-icing fluid delivered across the rail network and ensuring consistent application during winter operations.

The FT2 radial turbine flowmeter is designed to provide exceptional flexibility across a wide range of industrial applications. Featuring optical or Hall-effect detection, it uses a low inertia turbine mounted on robust sapphire bearings within a chemically resistant housing.

Available across nine flow ranges from 0.05 to 160 litres per minute, with a choice of plug-in fittings and individually traceable calibration, the FT2 offers one of the most versatile and reliable flow measurement solutions currently available.

Its proven performance enables Grinsty Rail to achieve the precision required for effective de-icing operations whilst maintaining the robustness needed for continuous operation in challenging rail environments.

Adapting flow measurement to environmentally friendly rail de-icing fluids

Like many sectors, the rail industry continues to reduce its environmental impact by adopting more sustainable operating practices. One significant development has been the transition towards fully biodegradable dual de/anti-icing fluids that deliver environmental benefits whilst maintaining operational effectiveness.

However, introducing these new fluids also presented significant engineering challenges for existing de-icing systems.

Unlike traditional clear and colourless formulations, the new biodegradable fluid is an opaque green liquid with a higher viscosity. These physical differences altered the way the fluid behaved within the system, particularly affecting sensing performance and flow measurement accuracy.

Working closely with Grinsty Rail, Titan Enterprises identified that the biodegradable fluid's optical properties created increased light attenuation within the sensing path, making the existing optical flow sensors unsuitable for the new coloured fluid.

Drawing on its extensive flow measurement expertise, Titan recommended implementing its OG2 oval gear sensing technology. The OG2 is inherently better suited to higher viscosity fluids and delivers consistent measurement accuracy regardless of fluid opacity or optical clarity.

This solution not only eliminated the light attenuation issue but also provided stable and repeatable flow measurement under the more demanding rheological conditions created by the environmentally compliant fluid. As a result, Grinsty Rail successfully upgraded its de-icing chemistry without compromising system accuracy, reliability or operational performance.

Balancing innovation with long-term engineering stability

Technology continues to evolve rapidly across every industrial sector and organisations are often encouraged to adopt frequent product updates. However, within industries such as rail, where assets remain operational for decades, innovation must be carefully balanced against stability.

Maintaining compatibility with existing systems reduces engineering risk, minimises costs and simplifies long-term maintenance strategies. This philosophy enables Grinsty Rail to introduce new capabilities where required whilst preserving the integrity of proven equipment already in service.

Jeremy Thorne, Titan's Operations Manager, explains: “Rather than driving unnecessary product changes, we prioritise reliability, durability and precision performance with consistent product design and availability, particularly for customers whose systems have a long operational life.”

This long-term approach has become increasingly valuable as Grinsty Rail undertakes refurbishment programmes designed to extend the operational lifespan of its de-icing systems. Throughout these upgrades, continuity of supply has remained essential.

Titan's FT2 and OG flowmeters continue to integrate seamlessly into both existing and refurbished systems, allowing legacy infrastructure to meet current operational requirements without requiring fundamental redesign.

The result is faster refurbishment, reduced engineering complexity and minimal disruption to rail operations, whilst maintaining the proven performance expected from safety-critical equipment.

Delivering measurable long-term benefits for the rail industry

The partnership between Titan Enterprises and Grinsty Rail demonstrates how carefully selected engineering partners can support both innovation and long-term operational resilience within the rail industry.

Through their ongoing collaboration, Grinsty Rail has achieved:

  • Reliable performance in demanding rail environments.
  • Long-term system stability across multiple vehicle platforms.
  • Reduced total cost of ownership.
  • Streamlined refurbishment programmes.
  • A trusted and enduring supplier relationship.

Beyond these measurable benefits, the success of the partnership has been built upon years of engineering collaboration and a detailed understanding of each organisation's systems, operational requirements and technical challenges. This close alignment has enabled both companies to respond effectively to changing industry demands whilst preserving the reliability expected from long-life rail assets.

As rail operators continue investing in infrastructure modernisation, refurbishment and sustainability initiatives, partnerships that combine engineering expertise with long-term product continuity will become increasingly valuable. Titan Enterprises' commitment to reliable flow measurement technology, product consistency and collaborative engineering ensures customers can modernise with confidence whilst protecting existing investments.
